Why charities under-claim Gift Aid

It is rarely eligibility. Most eligible donations simply never get a declaration attached to them.

The declaration is the bottleneck. A donor being eligible for Gift Aid and a donor actually ticking the box are two different things. The gap between them is your declaration rate, and it is almost always lower than charities assume until they check it.

Friction on the donation page kills declarations. An extra field, unclear wording, or a Gift Aid checkbox that looks optional rather than a genuine question, each one loses you donors who would have said yes if asked clearly.

Existing donors are the easiest fix. A regular giver who has never declared is not a lost cause, they are a five-minute email away. Before rebuilding anything, check whether your CRM or donation platform can identify donors with no Gift Aid declaration on file.

HMRC compliance still matters. A higher declaration rate is only worth claiming if your charity is recognised by HMRC and your records can support the claim. This tool gives you an estimate to work from, not a substitute for checking your HMRC status and record-keeping.

Questions charities ask about Gift Aid

There is no single benchmark that fits every charity, donor bases vary too much. What matters more than hitting a specific number is knowing your current rate and treating any meaningful gap between it and 100% as recoverable revenue worth investigating.

Yes. Your charity needs to be recognised for tax purposes by HMRC, separately from being registered with the Charity Commission, before you can claim. If you are not sure of your status, GOV.UK's Gift Aid guidance covers how to check and how to register.

Start with the donation page, since that is where most eligible declarations are won or lost. Make the Gift Aid question clear and visible rather than a small checkbox, explain in one sentence what it means for the donor, and check that it works cleanly on a phone. Then look at existing donors with no declaration on file, a short, plain-English email asking them to opt in often recovers more than any page redesign.

It varies too much by charity size, donor base, and existing process for a single figure to be meaningful, and we would rather you use the calculator above with your own numbers than repeat a general statistic that may not apply to you. What is consistent across the sector is that the gap between eligible donations and declared ones is rarely zero, and is usually worth checking.
